The Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica) is a subspecies of the lion which survives today only in India .It is also known as the Persian lion. They ranged once from the Mediterranean to India, covering most of Southwest Asia where it was also known as the persian lion.

Asiatic Lion is one of the seven sub-species of lions on this planet. Its scientific name is "Panthera Leo Persica". Gir, popular name for part of Gujarat in India is the only place where this magnificent animal is found today.

Asiatic lions have shaggier coats, with a longer tassel on the end of the tail and longer tufts of hair on the elbows. Both sexes have a distinctive fold of skin that runs along the belly. Males are 1.7-2.5 m long and weigh 150-250 kg, while females are 1.4-1.75 m in length and weigh in at 120-182 kg.

The Asiatic Lion ( Panthera leopersica )

The Asiatic lion, in India, is now found in only one pocket located in the Gir National Park of the state of Gujarat. There have been efforts made to relocate a small number of these lions to another park to try and ensure better survival chances of this majestic animal. However, these plans are yet to be put into action.
